When the weather outside is chilly and gray, crafting indoors becomes the perfect cozy activity. Whether you have toddlers, preschoolers, or school‑age kids at home this winter, these simple crafts are a great way to encourage creativity, motor skills, and bonding, without making a big mess.

Here are three winter‑inspired crafts that are easy, inexpensive, and perfect for a January afternoon.

Paper snowflakes on a dark surface, featuring blue and white designs. Blue and white pompoms add texture and color contrast.

1. Paper Plate Snowflakes

Age: 2+

Supplies:

  • Paper plates

  • Safety scissors

  • Markers or crayons

  • Stickers or glitter (optional)

How-To:

Fold a paper plate in half, then again into quarters. Help your child snip small triangles or shapes along the edges (just like cutting traditional paper snowflakes). When they unfold it, they’ll reveal a beautiful one‑of‑a‑kind snowflake! Let them decorate with glitter glue, crayons, or stickers.

Pro Tip: Talk about how no two snowflakes are the same — just like kids!

2. Penguin Footprint Art

Age: Babies and toddlers

Supplies:

  • Non-toxic black and white paint

  • Orange construction paper

  • Googly eyes (or draw them on)

  • A paper plate or canvas

How-To:

Paint the bottom of your child’s foot with black paint and gently press it onto the paper. Once dry, paint a white belly over the middle. Cut out an orange beak and feet, and glue them on. Add googly eyes or draw them with marker to finish the penguin face.

Perfect for: A keepsake you’ll treasure forever, especially for baby’s first winter.

3. Cotton Ball Snowman Collage

Cotton ball snowman on light blue paper with brown pipe cleaner arms and orange paper nose, creating a cheerful, crafty scene.

Age: 3+

Supplies:

  • Construction paper

  • Cotton balls

  • Glue

  • Markers or buttons for eyes & accessories

How-To:

Let your child glue 3 big circles of cotton balls on colored paper to build a fluffy snowman. Add eyes, a carrot nose, arms, and a scarf using markers or paper cutouts. This is a great sensory activity for little hands.

Bonus idea: Turn it into a card for grandparents!

Stay Cozy, Stay Creative

Crafting is more than just fun, it helps kids explore textures, colors, and patterns while building confidence and imagination. Plus, these moments at the table together become sweet winter memories you’ll both cherish.
