Helpful Newborn Bath Tips

Happy mom with newborn baby

Bathing your newborn doesn’t need to be stressful, with a few basic steps and gentle handling, bath time can become a relaxing routine that you and your baby both enjoy. Over time, this will be a sweet bonding experience that you look forward to!

Helpful Newborn Bath Tips

1. Start with Sponge Baths for the First Few Weeks

If your baby’s umbilical cord hasn’t yet fallen off, it’s best to stick to sponge baths. Using a soft washcloth, gently clean your baby’s face, neck, hands, and diaper area. Keep the room warm, and use a basin of lukewarm water. Remember, babies don’t need frequent baths—two to three times a week is typically plenty for their sensitive skin.

2. Choose Gentle, Baby-Friendly Products & Helpful Newborn Bath Tips

When it comes to newborn skin, less is more. Use a mild, unscented baby soap and shampoo to be helpful with avoiding irritation. Avoid any products with harsh chemicals or fragrances, as newborn skin is highly absorbent. A gentle baby washcloth and a soft towel are also essentials, keeping your baby cozy while reducing the risk of skin irritation.

3. Prepare and Test the Water Temperature

Fill the baby bath or basin with about two to three inches of lukewarm water. An ideal temperature is around 98-100°F (37-38°C)—similar to body temperature. Always test the water with your wrist or elbow, as these areas are more sensitive. The water should feel comfortably warm, not hot.

4. Practice Safe Handling and Positioning

Newborns are naturally a bit slippery when wet! Support your baby’s head and neck with one hand, keeping a firm but gentle grip under their back and shoulders. It can help to place your baby in a slightly reclined position in the tub. Keep your other hand free to wash and rinse, always keeping a steady hold.

5. Keep Bath Time Short and Sweet

A 5-10 minute bath is usually enough. Over-bathing can dry out newborn skin, so aim for quick, gentle washes. Use a soft washcloth to gently clean your baby’s face and body, moving slowly and speaking soothingly to keep them calm. Save hair washing for last so they don’t get cold.

6. Follow Up with Moisturizer and Cozy Towels

After the bath, wrap your baby in a soft towel right away, patting their skin dry instead of rubbing. A gentle, fragrance-free baby moisturizer can help lock in moisture and prevent dryness.
